Benefits of Sewing

Throughout history sewing has been an important skill. Allowing families and communities to produce their own clothes and other items, the importance of sewing cannot be underestimated. For many mothers it is one of the most important skills to know how to do – and has many benefits.

The history of sewing points to pre-historic times to see where sewing originated. As technology and resources caught up to this important skill in hunter-gatherer societies, sewing was improved. For instance, bronze needles were used when the metal was used as well in 3000 BC.

As all sewing was done by hand, it wasn’t until the 19th century when this was able to be replaced. The invention of the sewing machine, for many, removed the importance of being able to know how to sew.

Today the sewing machine has prevented many mothers and other individuals from learning how to sew. However, knowing how to sew in any right has many advantages. Some stay at home mothers, for instance, are able to make their own clothing or their kids costumes. Throw pillows, blankets, curtains, and decorations may also be able to be made with sewing.

As a mother sewing can have a number of other advantages. Take the holiday Halloween, for instance. Knowing how to sew can allow a mother to make accessories and a costume for her child. Kids costumes can be a work of art in the hand of an experienced sewer. This can truly add to the personalization of the costume, as well as a parent’s involvement in a fun at memory-filled day.

From ancient times to the present day, sewing remains an important tradition. While the sewing machine can make things easier, mothers can enjoy the benefits of sewing. Truly it remains an important skill that can maintain a positive presence in families.
